2021-04-18 Anna Akhmatova (1889–1966), one of twentieth-century Russia’s greatest poets, was viewed as a dangerous element by post-Revolution authorities. One of the few unrepentant poets to survive the Bolshevik revolution and subsequent Stalinist purges, she set for herself the artistic task of preserving the memory of pre-Revolutionary cultural heritage and of those who had been silenced. Written between 1935 and 1940, Anna Akhmatova’s “Requiem” follows a grieving mother as she endures the Great Purge. Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union’s General Secretary, unabatedly pursued eliminating dissenters and, consequently, accused or killed hundreds of thousands who allegedly perpetrated political transgressions (“Repression and Terror: Kirov Murder and Purges”). Written during the height of the Stalinist Terror, Akhmatova’s Requiem details her experiences of the arrests and sentences of her son and husband. Structured in a cycle of 15 poems and one prose paragraph, Akhmatova relates the stages of suffering, grief and consolation endured not only by herself but by many other wives and mothers and, on an allegorical level, the nation as a whole.
